Are the people on the other side of Earth upside down?

Category:

The terms “up” and “down” only make sense relative to a human who stands on the earth. The direction towards the center of the earth is his “down” direction. Another person on the other side of the globe would also point his “down” direction towards the center of Earth. If we looked at the whole model of the planet, we would see that the directions are not parallel and they can even be opposite of each other:

This is caused by Earth being round. It might be challenging for flat Earthers to imagine, but if Earth is not flat and if gravity pulls things to the center of the planet, then it is expected that the directions of “down” (as perceived from the surface) would be in different directions relative to each other.

There is no “up” and “down” in the Universe. It’s just words people use to describe their local direction of gravity.

And people on one side of Earth could consider the people on the other side to be upside down (and vice versa), but it’s not very practical when there is this massive Earth between you and them.

And there is nothing absurd about some people being in a different direction relative to each other on Earth. Just like ants on a tennis ball – there’s nothing absurd about one ant being “upside down” relative to another one.

And the intuition that “people are not upside down” stems from the fact that we just never see the people on the other side, because of the massive planet between us. And if we traveled to them (which would take days), the direction would change so slowly that we wouldn’t even notice. And when we come to their place, we would agree with them that their “down” is our “down”, so they would no longer be upside down relative to us.

For some people, it might not “feel right” to imagine other people walking in an opposite direction (relative to us). But we have to use our reason and understand that our intuitions are designed (by evolution) to help us deal with our local environment. And the things that we are used to, on our small scale, might look differently on the bigger scale.
